Automakers and their dealers know that when a vehicle is updated, redesigned, or discontinued, the last lagging examples of the old model may sit on lots for months, perhaps even years. So it appears to be with the Honda Insight, the subcompact mild hybrid hatchback that the company discontinued after the 2014 model year.

The Prius remained Japan’s top selling new passenger vehicle in August—its fourth month straight as the top seller, according to data from the Japan Automobile Dealers Association. The Honda Fit took the second spot, with 10,927 units (6%), followed by the Toyota Vitz (8,145, 4.5%) and the Honda Insight (7,900, 4.4%).

While the selection of hybrid models in the US has more than doubled since 2007, only 35% of hybrid vehicle owners choose to purchase a hybrid again when returning to market in 2011, according to recent analysis by Polk. As an example, the Honda Civic is the second most cross-shopped vehicle among both Toyota Prius and Honda Insight shoppers.
