The US Department of Energy (DOE) has selected four research and development projects designed to bring next-generation biofuels on line faster and to drive down the cost of producing gasoline, diesel, and jet fuels from biomass. Idaho National Laboratory will also bring their feedstock pre-processing capabilities to the project.

New to the 2016 report is novel assessments of potential biomass supplies from algae, from new energy crops (miscanthus, energy cane, eucalyptus), and from municipal solid waste. For the first time, the report also considers how the cost of pre-processing and transporting biomass to the biorefinery may impact feedstock availability.

The US Department of Agriculture (USDA) released a report outlining both the current state of renewable transportation fuels efforts in the US and a plan to develop regional strategies to increase the production, marketing and distribution of biofuels. In May, the Lenfest Center and Risø DTU hosted a one-day conference—“Sustainable Fuels from CO 2 , H 2 O, and Carbon-Free Energy”—addressing technologies that can be used to recycle CO 2 into carbon-neutral liquid hydrocarbon fuels using renewable or nuclear energy. The co-electrolysis process was featured in several of the talks.

The ClearFuels technology can convert multiple cellulosic biomass feedstocks such as sugarcane bagasse and virgin wood waste into clean synthesis gas (syngas) suitable for integration with synthetic gas-to-liquids technologies. This joint demonstration is anticipated to lead to the final design basis for the commercial facilities.
