The average cost of a particulate matter filter is $16,000, with the devices removing 85% of the diesel emissions from older trucks. With the new announcement, state, local and federal air agencies and ports now have provided $37 million in funding to help clean up more than 2,300 trucks at the Port of Oakland.

The California Air Resources Board and the Bay Area Air Quality Management District freed up an additional $3 million in grants for truckers and small businesses to comply with the 1 January deadline for the state’s port truck rule that will reduce toxic diesel emissions in and around port communities.

Christened Lurline , the new ship is the first of two Kanaloa Class con-ro vessels being built for Matson by NASSCO at a total cost of approximately $500 million for the pair, and the third of four new vessels that Matson is putting into service between 2018 and 2020. Matson’s Lurline launches into San Diego Bay.

Attaining environmental benefits and lower cost of ownership are driving more commercial fleets to electrify, according to a new study by UPS and GreenBiz. A lower total cost of ownership—factoring in both direct and indirect costs and savings over the life of the vehicle—is the second biggest driver, cited by 64% of respondents.

In this pilot project, enough compressed natural gas will be generated to displace 750 to 1,000 gallons of diesel fuel, and to power heavy-duty garbage collection trucks and an on-site generator producing renewable electricity for the facility. This fuel has 88% lower carbon intensity than ultra-low-sulfur diesel.

The evaluation will consider the impacts, processes, market effects and costs of the program, and will help to guide future program efforts. Electric Power Research Institute , based in Palo Alto, will receive $964,210 to retrofit five existing heavy-duty diesel work trucks with a plug-in hybrid electric vehicle powertrain system.
