Toyota hosted a special vehicle hand-over for one of the first Plug-in Prius models delivered to a UK customer. Dr Shoichiro Toyoda, Toyota Motor Corporation Honorary Chairman, personally presented the keys to the car to one of the brand’s biggest fleet customers, Electricity North West.

The plug-in version of the third-generation Toyota Prius will be open to leasing at the end of this year in Japan. Around 200 versions of the vehicle, equipped with a lithium-ion battery, will be made available and designated to government ministries, local governments and corporations.

According to reports in The Nikkei , the Toyota Motor Corporation plans to begin the commercial production of plug-in hybrid electric vehicles in 2012. The plug-ins will use lithium-ion batteries produced by Toyota’s joint venture with Panasonic Corporation, Panasonic Electric Vehicle Energy Company.

Japanese car maker Toyota has teamed up with its customer service IT company, Toyota Media Service Corporation, to develop a tool to support home-based charging. The tool will work with the Toyota Prius Plug-in Hybrid Vehicle, which is due to be launched next year, as well as other electric vehicles.
