As sales of electric vehicles begin to reach significant numbers across the US, states are exploring approaches to replace lost tax revenue since EV drivers don’t pay fuel taxes as drivers of gas-powered cars do at gas stations. Unfortunately there is currently no simple and agreed upon best replacement for the fuel tax.

The European Union (EU) recently adopted CO 2 emissions mandates for new passenger cars, requiring steady reductions to 95 gCO 2 /km in 2021. We argue that assessment of the performance of the EU targets and alternatives should account for interactions of the transport sector with other energy sectors and with other parts of the economy.

Australia’s per capita CO 2 emissions are higher than those of the US due to an emissions-intensive energy sector. For the first three years, the carbon price will be fixed, before moving to an emissions trading scheme in 2015. Gillard said that by 2020, this would cut emissions by some 160 million tonnes per year.

Although innovations in vehicle and fuel technology will have a substantial effect on reducing greenhouse gas emissions from transportation in the US, those gains will largely be offset by increases in travel along with growth in the US population, according to a new report from transportation consultancy Cambridge Systematics.

According to the report, “On the Road Toward 2050: Potential for Substantial Reductions in Light-Duty Vehicle Energy Use and Greenhouse Gas Emissions,” each element is separately important, but must collectively be pursued aggressively to achieve necessary emissions reductions.
