The Abfallentsorgungs-Gesellschaft Ruhrgebiet mbH ( AGR ), a waste management company in Herten, North Rhine-Westphalia, Germany, has put a converted DAF CF 340 hydrogen fuel cell truck into operation as part of the EU-funded HECTOR (Hydrogen Waste Collection Vehicles in North West Europe) project.

VTT Technical Research Centre of Finland and Lappeenranta University of Technology (LUT) are beginning testing of the Soletair demo plant, which uses air-captured carbon dioxide to produce renewable fuels and chemicals. Phase 2: Hydrogen production. Proton exchange membrane (PEM) water electrolysis is used for hydrogen production.

The demonstration of ClearFlame’s engine technology was implemented by taking a Class 8 diesel truck running on a Cummins X15 500hp 15L heavy-duty engine—commonly used for long-haul truck and off-highway applications—and converting it to run on renewable E98 ethanol.

Evonik Industries has demonstrated the use of bacteria to convert syngas to pure 2-hydroxyisobutyric acid (2-HIBA) under industrial conditions. Both the chemically-produced and biotech-produced products can be converted to methyl methacrylate (MMA). 2-HIBA is a precursor used in the manufacture of PLEXIGLAS. —Thomas Haas.
