Partners from Germany and Finland in the SOLETAIR project are building a compact pilot plant for the production of gasoline, diesel and kerosene from solar energy, regenerative hydrogen and carbon dioxide. A direct air capture unit developed by the Technical Research Center of Finland (VTT) extracts carbon dioxide from air.

The SOLETAIR project ( earlier post ) has produced its first 200 liters of synthetic fuel from solar energy and the air’s carbon dioxide via Fischer-Tropsch synthesis. The “Direct Air Capture” Unit developed by the Technical Research Center of Finland (VTT) captures carbon dioxide from air.

The EU’s DirectFuel project, which launched on 1 October, intends to develop a photobiological process for the direct conversion of sunlight and CO 2 into engine- and infrastructure-ready transport fuels such as propane. The 4-year project will have funding of up to €3.73 million (US$5.1 PCC 6803, a freshwater cyanobacterium.

VTT Technical Research Centre of Finland and Lappeenranta University of Technology (LUT) are beginning testing of the Soletair demo plant, which uses air-captured carbon dioxide to produce renewable fuels and chemicals.
