The biocrude oil came from many different sources, including wastewater sludge from Detroit, and food waste collected from prison and an army base. The research showed that essentially any biocrude, regardless of wet-waste sources, could be used in the process and the catalyst remained robust during the entire run.

The small footprint mini-refinery, to be operated by Red Lion, is expected to produce 350,000 gallons per year of synthetic diesel with a high biomass to fuel energy conversion efficiency. Red Lion says that its thermal conversion process is approximately 70% energy efficient.

The group is committed to making transportation fuel from agricultural waste, energy crops and forest biomass. The demo plant will have a capacity of 5 MT per day and has been designed so that it can be scaled up to 2000 MT per day.

In the Unitel process, the feedstock—a slurry or “soup” of water and cultivated algae (1% to 20% by weight) is continuously treated in a special hydrolysis reactor to yield: a fatty acid product; a “sweet” water stream containing glycerol and other solubles; and. Neogen – beneficial harvesting of low grade waste heat.
