UK-based Connected Energy and Groupe Renault have installed two quick-charge stations based on Connected Energy’s E-STOR energy storage technology on highways in Belgium and Germany. The E-STOR technology developed by Connected Energy uses second-life batteries from Renault electric vehicles.

Connected to the grid or even off-grid, the station can charge up to four electric cars simultaneously, based on the principle of a ‘power bank’, two with DC quick charging. By contrast, when it is permanently connected to the mains power grid, the battery pack continuously and independently recharges itself.

Its stability, even at high temperatures, permits high current delivery and fast recharging, all without the need for complex external cooling or elaborate battery management systems.

Endesa, Spain’s largest utility, has developed a prototype V2G (Vehicle to Grid) charger that enables electric vehicles to return stored power to the grid. These projects also evaluate the impact of a large-scale introduction of EVs on the power grid.
