In a press briefing held in Tokyo on its initiatives in automobile electrification, Honda announced that it will spend approximately ¥5 trillion (US$40 billion) in the area of electrification and software technologies to further accelerate its electrification over the next 10 years, including both R&D expenses (¥3.5 trillion / US$12 billion).

Michigan Governor Gretchen Whitmer announced an initiative to develop a first-of-its-kind corridor for connected and autonomous vehicles (CAV) designed to improve transportation for communities in Southeast Michigan. This includes leading test tracks, universities, automotive companies, and key economic anchors.

Honda Research Institute (HRI), a Honda R&D subsidiary, and Boston University have agreed to begin joint research in the area of data security and privacy for artificial intelligence (AI) research. In order to enable AI to cooperate with people, personal information about the users must be collected and analyzed.

Honda has begun deliveries of the 2013 Fit EV ( earlier post ), with the first going to the city of Torrance today as one of the first major steps in the Honda Electric Vehicle Demonstration Program. Honda and the city will continue to further these initiatives while also studying local government fleet usage of an electrified vehicle.

The US Department of Transportation (DOT) today launched the largest-yet road test of connected vehicle crash avoidance technology in Ann Arbor, Michigan. NHTSA will use the valuable data from the ‘model deployment' as it decides if and when these connected vehicle safety technologies should be incorporated into the fleet.
