In the initial phase, the aim is to install nearly 100 DC Fast charging ports across both coasts, with plans to expand the program to increase access to fast charging across the country. The installations will occur both within and between relevant metro areas, strategically spaced at a maximum of 50 miles (80 km) apart. to 4 hours.

Electric vehicle (EV) drivers can now travel the most heavily-trafficked corridors on the East and West Coasts of the United States with the installation of 95 new DC Fast charging stations as part of the Express Charging Corridors Initiative—a collaboration of BMW of North America, Volkswagen of America, Inc.

In addition to each being equipped with two Level-2 chargers (40 total in the PNW region), 10 of the dealers will also be up-fitted with 50kW Signet FC50K-CC-S DC fast chargers, increasing Kia’s overall network of fast-charging stations. This fast charger can charge the Soul EV’s battery from empty to 80% in about 33 minutes.

Level 2 charging will provide for a charging speed up to 20-25 miles of driving range per hour, which would allow drivers to fully charge their electric vehicles at their home or workplace. Joining Electrify America in this initiative are SemaConnect, EV Connect and Greenlots.

The expansion of the Supercharger network builds upon the initial deployment of the network in California and Nevada on the west coast and the Washington, DC to Boston region on the east coast. Tesla says that the Supercharger network has enabled an estimated 1 million miles of electric driving since going live in October 2012.

On another front, DOE will partner with industry, the National Laboratories, and other stakeholders to develop a study that will examine the vehicle, battery, infrastructure, and economic implications of direct current (DC) fast charging of up to 350 kW, which is expected to be completed by the end of 2016.
