Date palm juice inhibited corrosion of an aluminum alloy called AA7075, used in aerospace and other applications, in a salt solution, according to a new study by Husnu Gerengi at Duzce University in Turkey. Gerengi decided to check date palm juice. Fruit Juice on 7075 Type Aluminum Alloy in 3.5% NaCl Solution.

Researchers from the University of Florida’s Institute of Food and Agricultural Sciences (UF/IFAS) have found that three UF/IFAS-developed sorghum varieties could produce up to 10,500 liters of ethanol per hectare (about 1,100 gallons US per acre). Researchers at Tsinghua University in China have shown that sugarcane juice is a good feedstock for biodiesel production, when used to support the growth of the alga Chlorella protothecoides by heterotrophic fermentation. Conversion ratios of sugar/biomass and sugar/oil using SCH were 15.2 higher than that using glucose, respectively.

A multi-institutional team led by the University of Illinois has genetically engineered sugarcane to produce lipids in its leaves and stems for biodiesel production (lipid-cane). Co-authors of the paper include: Haibo Huang (Virginia Polytechnic Institute and State University); Robert A. Grennan (University of Illinois).

The process has been tested with a wide variety of feedstocks including sugar cane juice, corn starch, sweet sorghum juice, molasses types including sugar cane and beets and cellulosic sugars. The bulk of the lab and pilot work has been conducted at Louisiana State University. and Louisiana State University Agricultural Center.
