So the concept of a heat pump is that the heat you want to remove from the engine can be used somewhere the heat is required like heating the car. GM believes it can help speed up charging and acceleration and extend range. Obviously by circulation water through the engine and how do you cool down the water?

However, because of the duty cycle used by the Postal Service, which generally amounts to only about 18-20 miles per day on a fixed route, these vehicles are being built without the range extender seen on the concept.

Gallery: Plugging in at home Battery swap stations are a concept often associated with Better Place , an EV infrastructure company. For extended range I guess one could carry a fairly modest generator set in the trunk to avoid ever being stranded. The modular concept also allows scalability even within your own car.
