Southern California Gas Co. FXI) announced the addition of 11 new ultra-low emission natural gas trucks to the FXI fleet. The company, with the assistance of SoCalGas, applied for and received $1.1 million in grant funding for the new Kenworth T680 trucks ( earlier post ) which started making deliveries today.

This is the first large-scale demonstration of zero-emission Class 8 trucks that involves major manufacturers, including BYD, Kenworth, Peterbilt (both Paccar companies) and Volvo. The State of California is awarding $23.6 Volvo will be deploying a plug-in hybrid electric diesel truck under the Mack brand.

The California Energy Commission recently approved funding of $8,554,000 to help bring natural gas- and propane-powered shuttle buses, cars and trucks to California’s roadways. Kenworth Truck Company (Kirkland, Washington) is awarded $884,000 for the buy-down of 34 natural gas vehicles of 26,001 pounds and greater gross vehicle weight range.

The stations, which will be built in Waco, Amarillo, Harrold, Sweetwater, Weatherford, Kerrville and Midland, will initially fuel forty new Class-8 Kenworth and Peterbilt CNG sleeper trucks, a number that will double over the course of the agreement.
