On 22 October 2019, GSC Logistics was the first to haul a commercial cargo using an electric semi through the Altamont Pass, with their BYD 8TT heavy-duty electric truck. The truck easily maintained 55 mph up the 8% grade through the Altamont Pass. The 8TT delivers 483 hp and 1,770 lb-ft of torque, powered by a 409 kWh battery pack.

Supported by a $3-million California Energy Commission grant, the companies are working to convert a fleet of six, Class-6 International armored trucks into “Zero Emission with Range Extension” vehicles—PHEV trucks that operate with electricity and renewable natural gas (RNG). The CNG storage tanks are roof-mounted.

Wegmans hopes to convert its entire lift truck fleet at the Pottsville facility to hydrogen fuel cells over the next few years. The warehouse installation is the first commercial site in Pennsylvania to move consumer goods using hydrogen-powered material handling equipment.

All the commercially available freeway-capable (70 mph) EVs are priced way out of reach for the average consumer.
