Then, in 2009, I was recruited into Google’s effort to make renewable energy cheaper than coal (an initiative we called RE While that last project didn’t pan out as hoped, I learned a lot from it. I grew up in Ontario, Canada, which achieved a climate-friendly electric grid in the 1970s by deploying nuclear power plants.

News of a major breakthrough in fusion technology has recently swept through the media outlets. Not much yet, but most likely it will open the flood gates to additional funding for future fusion research. Once fusion is truly established and on the grid the price of electricity will plummet, then it will all be about batteries.

Once weve consolidated everything to depend on the grid, we can clean up everything by cleaning up the grid. Once electric cars are more common, demand for electricity will rise, and electricity producers will have to look at big generators such as dams, nuclear stations or decentralised wind turbines that feed in to the grid.

The accelerating buildout of solar farms on Earth is already hitting speed bumps, including public pushback against the large tracts of land required and a ballooning backlog of requests for new transmission lines and grid connections. In that respect, beamed power from space is like nuclear fusion, except at least 25 years behind.

Experts predict that by the year 2060 global warming, if left unchecked, could result in a temperature rise of seven degrees Fahrenheit higher than temperatures before the Industrial Revolution when man started widespread use of coal and other fossil fuels. The fact is, about half the world’s electricity comes from coal.
