The Volkswagen Group and Greece have agreed to establish a mobility system on the Mediterranean island of Astypalea. To that end, the current transport system on the island will transition to electric vehicles and renewable power generation. In the long run, Astypalea will strive to become a model island for climate-neutral mobility.

The global merchant fleet currently consumes around 330 million tonnes of fuel annually, 80-85 per cent of which is residual fuel with high sulfur content.

The higher share of gas led to an improved carbon intensity of fossil fuel consumption in many Member States. Other findings include: Emissions were higher in most of the key sectors in 2010, particularly those sectors relying on fossil-fuel combustion.
