By comparison, 69% of steel today is made at approximately 1,600 degrees Celsius (2,912 degrees Fahrenheit) using coal, emitting about two tons of carbon dioxide for every ton of steel produced. If the steel industry were a country, its carbon emissions would rank third in the world behind China and the United States.

In the US, a combination of demand reduction and displacement of coal-fired power by gas-fired generation is the lowest cost way to reduce CO 2 emissions by up to 50%. The US should support unconventional natural gas development outside US, particularly in Europe and China, as a means of diversifying the natural gas supply base.
