Fletcher is responsible for the Extended Range Electric Vehicle propulsion system in the Chevrolet Volt as well as the propulsion systems in GM’s upcoming line-up of Plug-In Hybrid Elecrtic Vehicles. eAssist is available on the Buick Lacrosse and Regal, as well as the Chevrolet Malibu and 2014 Impala.

Chevrolet Malibu ECO PowerFlow screen. Chevrolet has introduced the 2013 Malibu ECO, its most fuel-efficient midsize sedan yet. The Malibu ECO features GM’s eAssist light electrification technology ( earlier post ), which is engineered to deliver an estimated 26 mpg in city driving and 38 mpg on the highway.

The auto industry should play a central role in the energy discussion, Akerson noted, because light-duty vehicles account for about 60% of total transportation energy usage in the United States. According to Brooks, among the technologies GM is looking to in the gasoline engine area are: Continued aggressive downsizing. We don’t need new fuels, we need improved gasoline with high RON, high sensitivity and low variability. Compression rations between 13 and 14 to maximize work extraction. Low variability across the marketplace.
