DOE announces $60M to accelerate advanced vehicle technologies research

Green Car Congress

VTO-funded research has reduced the cost of advanced batteries by 75% since 2008, and nearly every plug-in electric vehicle (PEV) on the road today uses VTO-developed battery technology. DOE is working to lower the cost of the power electronics and motors in an EV to $7/kW by 2022 from $30/kW in 2012.

Dow Energy Materials showcases current Li-ion cathode, anode and electrolyte systems at EVS26; layered-layered NMC cathode and Si anode materials under development

Green Car Congress

Dow Energy Materials uses a proprietary coating process for their anode and cathode materials that, when used in combination, provide greater lifetime (up to 2x over conventional uncoated systems), higher energy density, improved safety and a faster charging rate. One-third of the cost of an electric vehicle is the battery itself.

EV Everywhere Blueprint outlines DOE technical and development goals for EVs for 2022

Green Car Congress

Reducing the cost of electric drive systems from $30/kW to $8/kW. When these goals are met, the levelized cost of an all-electric vehicle with a 280-mile range will be comparable to that of an ICE vehicle of similar size. That would take a 55 kW system cost of $1,650 down to $440 and increase power density from 1.1 kW/kg to 1.4
