Aluminum production accounts for roughly 1% of global greenhouse-gas emissions each year, via a two~step process: refining of aluminum oxide powder from bauxite ore and conversion to aluminum in smelters. However, nearly 20% of the emissions are from the production and degradation of the carbon anodes used during smelting.

The California-based Hyperlight Energy will be piloting an installation where they plan to use existing oil wells as solar thermal wellsprings, with the stored energy being converted back to clean electricity when required. During winter, he adds, they can pull up the energy and generate zero-carbon electricity based on the demand curve.

Regeneration of sodium using a patented ceramic transport membrane reactor developed by Ceramatec: The sodium salts are dissolved in a solvent, and introduced to the ceramic membrane reactor. When electricity is applied to the ceramic membrane, elemental sodium is extracted through the membrane and recycled to the process.
