The SAE Taskforce on wireless charging and positioning of electric vehicles (SAE J2954) ( earlier post ) is progressing, and is slated to have a final draft of the guideline this year, according to the Society of Automotive Engineers, International (SAE). Under the emerging J2954 guidelines, communications for wireless charging will use DSRC.

Hyundai Heavy Industries in Korea will receive Li-ion battery packs for electric buses; the packs are similar configurations as packs currently in operation in California with AC Transit. Transportation comprises light and heavy duty vehicles, military and industrial, and continues to be the company’s primary market.

Based on detailed model-level data for US light-duty vehicles from 1980 to 2006, a recent analysis by a UC Davis researcher found that if weight, horsepower and torque had been held at their 1980 levels, fuel economy for both passenger cars and light trucks could have increased by nearly 50% from 1980 to 2006. Transportation sources accounted for approximately 40% of all GHG emissions in the US in 2006; medium- and heavy-duty vehicles (above 8,500 gross vehicle weight rating) represent about 22% of the transportation emissions, up from 15 percent in 1990, according to the EPA. The results are specific to long-haul trucks.
