It’s about one-twentieth the size of the minibus-scale geostationary satellites already in orbit, allowing for cheap and quick deployment. The wind part of the project plans a total of 3,000 megawatts from wind farms it will build in three counties in New Mexico. But this satellite is the first of a new breed, dubbed microGEO.

In 2001, a team of engineers at a then-obscure R&D company called AC Propulsion quietly began a groundbreaking experiment. They wanted to see whether an electric vehicle could feed electricity back to the grid. The company’s president, Tom Gage , dubbed the system “vehicle to grid” or V2G.

At one point they passed a fire engine, which the car’s software mistook for a mere truck: a bug, though no one was endangered. People build a safety-critical system, then they put a cheap commercial software product in the middle of it. I know of no examples of someone shutting down a grid with malware. What’s next?

We need to keep in mind that fossil fuel plants are typically cheap to operate, so reducing cost can sometimes result in increased emissions.
