The smallfour-seater Mitsubishi iMiEV uses lithium-ion but is likely to cost up to£20,000 when it becomes available here later this year. Witha 60-mile range, most felt the need to recharge after 30 miles or so. BMW’s Oxfordplant is the sole source of the Mini so if an electric Mini goes intoproduction it will start there.

Standardization of battery shape and chemistry is another consideration that gives one pause. Also, until standardization of connectors becomes fully implemented, EV owners may have to carry an assortment of adapters to be able to plug in to chargers from different suppliers. One of the main drawbacks to charge stations is speed.
