Volvo Cars is tripling electric car manufacturing capacity at its plant in Ghent, Belgium as it prepares to meet fast growing demand for its Recharge line-up of chargeable cars. Ghent is currently preparing to take a second fully electric Volvo model, based on the CMA modular vehicle architecture, into production later this year.

Following the introduction of the XC40 Recharge and now the C40 Recharge, Volvo Cars will roll out several additional electric models in coming years. By 2025, Volvo Cars aims for 50% of its global sales volume to consist of fully electric cars, with the rest hybrids. By 2030, it plans for every car it sells to be pure electric.

The all-electric Volvo C40 Recharge is available online via volvocars.com in select markets across Europe as of this week. The propulsion system consists of twin electric motors, one on the front and one on the rear axle, powered by a 78 kWh battery that can be fast-charged to 80% in about 40 minutes.

Two electric central motors on the second and third axles give the bus the power it needs for city traffic. In contrast to electric motors positioned close to the wheel hubs, these models are easier to access and have a simpler design. This testing program includes two field trials with the new MAN Lion’s City 18 E.

Polestar, the electric performance car brand jointly owned by Volvo Car Group and Zhejiang Geely Holding, unveiled the Polestar 2 electric fastback in an online reveal from Polestar’s headquarters in Gothenburg, Sweden. Polestar 2 will make its first public appearance at the Geneva International Motor Show next week.

Unveiled in 2019, the Polestar 2 put the brand on a new path toward becoming an all-electric automaker. The Polestar 2 is the brand’s first fully electric vehicle after the Polestar 1, a hybrid with up to 78 miles of electric range. Polestar’s electric performance car fuses Swedish luxury into the compact EV segment.

Energy storage company Leclanché SA and Škoda Electric, a manufacturer of electric drives and traction motors for trolley and electric buses, have signed a Joint Development Agreement and Framework Purchase Contract through which Leclanché will provide Škoda Electric with battery solutions for its electric bus expansion strategy.
