Global vehicle sales totalled 5.55 This represents the largest year-on-year monthly decrease since 1980, when JATO Dynamics started to collect data—even surpassing the global financial crisis in November 2008, which saw a 25% decline in sales. Indeed, the BEV figures were only 10,000 units less than the hybrids.

This new report shows that sales of electrically-chargeable cars in the EU increased by 110% over the past three years. During the same period however, the number of charging points grew by just 58% (to less than 200,000)—demonstrating that investment in infrastructure is not keeping pace with increased sales of electric vehicles.

For the second successive year, the share of diesel vehicle sales declined and in 2016 fell below 50% of new sales—the lowest share of new sales since 2009 according to the official statistics. of new sales, followed by gasoline vehicles (47%), and alternatively fueled vehicles (3.3%, including electric vehicles).

Demand fell by 46% compared to April 2019 but it was mostly due to the hybrid cars, which saw a decline of 66% to 18,900 units. Pure electric cars registered a decrease of 29% to 16,700 vehicles, while plug-in hybrids saw almost 14,000 new clients, up by 7%. Only 13 models posted growth.

Besides affordability, the report identified a balanced supply of charging and refueling infrastructure as a pre-requisite for stronger sales of alternatively-powered vehicles across the EU. The Commission has proposed a ‘benchmark’ for the sales of full battery-electric cars at the level of 15% by 2025, and 30% by 2030.

Sales of new passenger cars in the EU increased by 3% in 2017 compared to the previous year. For the first year since monitoring started, gasoline cars became the most sold vehicles in the EU, constituting almost 53% of sales. The biggest decrease of diesel cars was registered in Greece and Luxemburg (- 19 and – 17 percentage points).
