Photo: China News Service Renewable energy costs in Asia last year were 13% cheaper than coal and are expected to be 32% cheaper by 2030, according to a new study. This is significant because it marks a shift toward making renewables increasingly competitive with coal, a mainstay in APAC’s energy mix.

When I was studying China and Mandarin Chinese 35 years ago, “Red” China was unrecognized by the US, literally, and dark in a way difficult to imagine now. And three types of electric busses - legacy trolleys with catenary wires, battery busses, and super capacitor busses. We really don’t need more cheap gas cars.

During the late innings of the ICE-age (as in the Internal Combustion Engine age) it has become clear that feeding gasoline and diesel to the next billion new cars is not going to be easy, or cheap. If you want it to perform like a sports car instead of a slug in a sportscars skin, youre going to need that 10k for the ac drive system alone, and then maybe another 15k for a lithium battery pack. I also think it will be cheap, which is why I think someone will buy the group. from coal. Which puts you at 50k, plus labor.

Why hes banking on an obscure Chinese electric car company and a CEO who - no joke - drinks his own battery fluid. BYD CEO Wang Chuan-Fu figured out how to make cheaper batteries than the Japanese by replacing machines with migrant workers. The E6 will hit the Chinese market later this year.

It was started by a chemist and government researcher named Wang Chuan-Fu in 1995 (same year as Yahoo) to make rechargeable batteries, which it learned to do very well. Within a few years, BYD’s batteries were cheaper and just as reliable as those made by industry giants ony and Sanyo. BYD is an amazing company.
