Brazil, Russia, India, and China (the BRIC nations) will represent the largest increases, as the percentage of global road transportation energy consumed by these nations is forecast to grow from 20% in 2014 to 36% in 2035. Similarly, ethanol has done well in the United States and Brazil, but expansion into other countries has been slow.

The FSV Program is midway through its second phase, designing optimized AHSS body structures for four proposed 2015-2020 year vehicles: battery electric (BEV); plug-in hybrid electric (PHEV), with both PHEV-20 and PHEV-40 powertrains; and fuel cell (FCV), with variants among the different powertrain types for four and five passengers vehicles.

The survey found that most companies are hedging their bets and spreading funding across a wide range of areas, with ICE downsizing and plug-in hybrids expected to receive the greatest investment over the next 5 years. Brazil: 35% believe the share will be 1-5%.

The PHEV does not require the heavy, costly batteries required by other electric cars, nor does it suffer from a limited range or poor freeway performance. It is alarming to see comparisons of the Chevrolet Volt PHEV with battery electric cars when the comparison focuses only on the electric range and ignores the other important differences.
