This project will deploy 35 fuel cell systems as battery replacements for a complete fleet of electric lift trucks at FedEx’s existing service center in Springfield, Missouri. It’s exactly the same as the unit in the new Qashqai e-Power that will go on sale soon after the X-Trail e-Power, including its maximum outputs of 116kW and 250Nm. The electrical output of the generator bolted to this engine will be a little less, because no energy conversion is ever 100 percent efficient.

A unique joint project between carmaker Volvo and Swedish energy supplier Vattenfall is to see the production of battery-powered Volvos featuring plug-in hybrid technology as early as 2012. An outside conversion specialist contracted by Volvo Cars will fit the gas tank. The car’s range on gas is about 300 km.
