The performance of this new generation of powertrains will reflect significant advances in battery, electric motor and gasoline engine technologies. The gasoline engine in the next-generation Prius powertrain feature thermal efficiency of greater than 40%; the thermal efficiency of the gasoline engine in the current Prius is 38.5%.

The lithium-ion battery comprises 168 prismatic cells and is liquid-cooled. The Q7 PHEV will arrive in dealerships in Germany in 2016, and will likely come to the US, although perhaps with a gasoline-engine variant. Its emphasis is on lithium-ion battery systems, which are put together using a flexible, modular concept.

The discovery came when MIT researchers Byoungwoo Kang and Gerbrand Ceder found out how to get a common lithium compound to release and take up lithium ions in a matter of seconds. The breakthrough could revolutionize electric car battery technology and pave the way for ultra-fast charging electric vehicles in as little as two years.
