They wanted to see whether an electric vehicle could feed electricity back to the grid. The company’s president, Tom Gage , dubbed the system “vehicle to grid” or V2G. For the utilities, it promised an economical way of meeting rising demand for electricity. AC Propulsion’s experiment was timely.

In a talk at the opening plenary of the Electric Drive Transportation Association (EDTA) conference in Washington, DC, former New York Governor George Pataki called for a 40% market penetration of electric drive vehicles in the US by the end of the decade. We need an interactive grid to make this work. Gasoline is too cheap.

Proponents believe such a car could be easily refuelled with hydrogen and assumed it would have greater range than a pure all-electric car. Little seems developed in any wide commercial sense and certainly not to the extent of the pure electric car. It is important to realize that a fuel cell car is actually an electric car.

Current Hybrids are natural donor platforms because they already have most of the needed electric propulsion components, so the conversion process deals primarily with integrating larger battery packs.A charger is also required, though ideally the existing motor controllers might be used as grid chargers.
