Lexus will debut the NX PHEV OFFROAD Concept and hydrogen-engined ROV (Recreational Off highway Vehicle) Concept at the Tokyo Auto Salon 2022 held at Makuhari Messe (Chiba City) this weekend. The NX PHEV OFFROAD Concept is based on Lexus’ first PHEV model that went on sale in November 2021, the NX 450h+.

Lexus announced the world premiere of the all-new NX, the first model of Lexus’ next-generation range. Under the “Lexus Electrified” initiative, the new NX accelerates the proliferation of electrified models by being Lexus’ first Plug-in Hybrid Electric Vehicle (PHEV); the NX is also offered as a Hybrid Electric Vehicle (HEV).

Toyota has taken covers off its electric bZ Concept compact SUV, looking near production ready and primed to be an EV version of the next-generation C-HR. Revealed at this month’s Los Angeles Auto Show, the bZ Concept joins the Tesla-fighting bZ3 electric sedan revealed last month and bZ4X electric SUV due on-sale in Australia in 2023.

As of right now, Toyota only offers two EVs in the US: the bZ4X and Lexus RZ. Toyota, including Lexus, sold over 565,000 vehicles in the US in the first three months of 2024. The overall auto market saw volumes of 13.342 units, up almost 16% YoY, and higher than May 2019. Volume of PHEVs was down only about 20% from May last year (despite much less incentive support), whilst BEV volumes increased by over 27% YoY. Whatever the name, the verdict is this was the best motor show of the post-pandemic era as the Japanese auto giants delivered a series of stunning electric concepts. Of course, concepts are one thing and production cars another. Lexus LF-ZC Lexus LF-ZC. Lexus LF-ZL Lexus LF-ZL.

Ignoring the briefly popular commercial electrics around at the turn of the last century, EVs have been experimental concepts or limited edition runs until relatively recently. A new model provides a fresh start but as an unknown quantity needs heavy promotion to get traction in the crowded auto market. Lexus did the trick.
