Here in the UK we’re so downtrodden by extortionate petrol prices that the prospect of driving fuel efficient green cars carries obvious appeal. However, what about our US neighbours where ‘gas’ prices are distinctly lower and so-called muscle cars are seen as almost iconic and part of the culture?

The Nissan Leaf was a big feature of the Washington Auto Show last month, and the vehicle has been praised for its eco-friendly virtues. It won Green Car Journal’s 2010 Green Car Vision Award recently, for satisfying all the needs of a modern driver, whilst at the same time producing zero localised emissions and requiring no petrol.

Describing himself as anti-tax but pro-carbon tax, Tesla Motors founder Elon Musk risked the backlash of US motorists by declaring that petrol should probably cost $10 a gallon. With the US auto industry in disarray, Tesla’s focus on premium green cars has emerged as a bright spark.

It is our belief that the bar could have been set higher and that the rewards for replacing an old vehicle with a truly green car would have been more fitting than simply replacing it with a vehicle that offers marginally better fuel economy.

Riversimple shot to fame in June 2009 when they unveiled arguably the most exciting development for British green car technology yet; the two-seater Riversimple hydrogen prototype. I believe that all three barriers are very real for the auto industry but they are not true in any absolute sense.
