We first saw the Audi e-tron Quattro Concept at the 2015 Frankfurt Motor Show. Now we learn the production electric car will be named simply Audi e-tron. Today, a name for a future electric car, an energy debate in a small state, and a possible way to turn greenhouse gases into vehicle fuel. Everyone assumes.

Toyota titillates with its plug-in Prius test program (600 vehicles worldwide over the next few years) as well as an all-electric 50-mile range "small, urban commuter BEV" and a plug-in hybrid concept small car. Audi , too, continues to tantalize with its E-tron. No word on when. They say the car will go on sale in 2012.

Volkswagen Group (which includes VW, Audi, Porsche, Lamborghini and Bentley in the U.S.) has fully embraced EVs and, after years of teasing with snazzy concepts, the real hardware is for sale–and is selling well.

The move to a four-wheel drive hybrid sees Toyota return to a concept which has been part of its racing hybrid development since 2007, when the four-wheel drive Supra HV-R became the first hybrid to win an endurance race, the Tokachi 24 Hours. Toyota has already sold more than 6 million hybrid road cars since the launch of the Prius in 1997.

Ignoring the briefly popular commercial electrics around at the turn of the last century, EVs have been experimental concepts or limited edition runs until relatively recently. Battery-gasoline hybrids go back more than 20 years to the first Toyota Prius, but real mainstream battery-only electric EVs are only in their second decade.
