We project that electric vehicles will save the city $110,000 per year in reduced fuel and maintenance, costs that we would otherwise have to spend on gas-powered vehicles. Houston already has the third-largest municipal hybrid fleet in the country. Hybrids now constitute more than 50% of the city’s light-duty fleet.

An IntelliChoice.com survey finds that most 2009 US hybrid and clean diesel cars, trucks and SUVs deliver a lower total cost of ownership compared to gasoline versions of the same (or comparable) vehicles. The point we make is that it is not just about fuel. Buyers also need to consider costs such as maintenance and resale value.
