The California Energy Commission unanimously approved funding of $35,031,310 to projects that will accelerate the development of green fuels and technology in California. These awards are provided through the Energy Commission’s Alternative and Renewable Fuel and Vehicle Technology Program.

For future scenarios where vehicle technology costs were sufficiently competitive to advantage either hydrogen or electric vehicles, the increased availability of low-cost, low-CO 2 electricity/hydrogen provided more cost-effective CO 2 mitigation opportunities in the heat and power energy sectors than in transportation.

The DOE-QTR defines six key strategies: increase vehicle efficiency; electrification of the light duty fleet; deploy alternative fuels; increase building and industrial efficiency; modernize the electrical grid; and deploy clean electricity. Vehicle efficiency has the greatest short- to mid-term impact on oil consumption.

The five different fuel groups were those derived: from conventional petroleum; from unconventional petroleum; synthetically from natural gas, coal, or combinations of coal and biomass via the FT process; renewable oils; and alcohols. The award recipients are: Buster Biofuels, LLC, based in the San Diego area, will receive $2,641,723 to convert a 7,300 square foot industrial warehouse building into a biodiesel manufacturing and fueling facility. The facility will create biodiesel from renewable waste-based materials such as used cooking oil from restaurants.

The alternative-fuel car evolved to reduce exhaust emissions and other problems derived from burning fossil fuels. The PHEV (Plug-in Hybrid Electric Vehicle), a subset of the electric car, combines a primary electric motor with a much smaller back-up engine fueled with a hydrocarbon/biofuel mix.
