North European Bio Tech Oy (NEB) has made an investment decision concerning the construction of a bioethanol plant on the Renforsin Ranta industrial estate in Kajaani, Finland. A team from the University of Vaasa (Finland) and UPM-Kymmene Corporation has examined how the blends of fossil and renewable diesel produced from crude tall oil (CTO) affect the performance and exhaust emissions of the modern common-rail off-road diesel engine. UPM BioVerno renewable diesel is produced from wood-based tall oil.

Novozymes will supply enzyme technology to a new biorefinery that will be built by St1 Biofuels in Kajaani, Finland. Construction is scheduled to begin in the second half of 2015, with production expected to start in 2016. The construction of the biorefinery supports Finland’s climate and energy strategy.

The EU-funded COMSYN project aims to develop a production concept for competitive bio-based fuels by means of a compact gasification and synthesis process. The Fischer-Tropsch products will be upgraded to fuels in existing central oil refineries, also bringing the benefits of economy of scale for the overall process.

Following a world survey of the marine industry, Zeus Development Corporation has identified 63 LNG-fueled ships in operation or under development, up from 48 units last December. On 6-7 June, Zeus will host an LNG-Fueled Marine Advancements meeting to present the survey, review trends and tour a new LNG-turbine propulsion system by GE.
