Toyota anticipates that the 2016 Prius ( earlier post ) will deliver fuel economy ratings of 54 MPG city / 50 MPG highway / 52 MPG combined. A new Eco grade model is expecting ratings of 58 MPG city / 53 MPG highway / 56 MPG combined thanks to lighter weight and further optimized aerodynamics.

Toyota anticipates that the 2016 RAV4 Hybrid—unveiled earlier this year at the New York International Auto Show ( earlier post ) and the eighth hybrid in Toyota’s line-up—will receive EPA ratings of 34 mpg city / 31 mpg highway / 33 mpg combined (6.9, l/100 km, respectively) for both 2016 RAV4 Hybrid models.

Following the introduction of the Bosch electric axle-split hybrid in PSA Peugeot Citroën diesel vehicles ( earlier post ), the two companies are now planning to develop a hydraulic hybrid powertrain for passenger cars. PSA says the technology—called “Hybrid Air”—will be fitted on B-segment models starting in 2016.

Hyundai expects the 2016 Sonata Hybrid to improve fuel economy more than 10%. The 2016 Sonata Hybrid features a downsized 2.0-liter liter Nu GDI four-cylinder engine paired with a six-speed automatic transmission that houses a more powerful 38 kW electric motor and clutch where the torque converter would normally be found.

The proposed regulations cover passenger cars sold in China from 2016 to 2020, and project an overall fleet-average fuel consumption of 5L/100km (47 mpg US) for new passenger cars in 2020, as measured over the New European Driving Cycle (NEDC), from an expected fleet average of 6.9L/100km 100km (34 mpg US) in 2015.
