The California Independent System Operator Corporation (ISO), California’s non-profit grid operator, released its new five-year (2012-2016) strategic plan. Between now and 2020, wind and solar generation will quadruple within the ISO transmission grid at the same time electric vehicle charging increases significantly.

Electricity providers can earn those certificates by generating electricity from renewable sources themselves; alternatively, they can buy certificates from other providers. But Rhode Island plans to fill the gap with as much as 600 megawatts of new wind power. That makes that 2033 goal all the more achievable.

Even with the implementation of the smart grid it seems unlikely that we will all be able to buy our power from West Virginia.
