Increased new vehicle sales and lower scrappage rates pushed VIO to the highest point on record since Q3 2008. In Q2 2013, more than half (50.9%) of VIO were between model years 2000 and 2008. The number of cars and light trucks on the road in the US reached 247.9 of the VIO market in Q2 2013.

IHS revised downward its forecast for light vehicle sales in China, projecting a decline of 3 to 4 percent from previous estimates for 2015. IHS Automotive has reduced its full year 2015 light vehicle sales forecast for China to 23.4 However, sales activity may not be as negative as current media reports suggest, according to IHS.

Toyota’s Prius was the top-seller in Japan in July, with 27,712 units sold—almost quadruple the 7,058 units sold in July 2008, according to data from the Japan Automotive Dealers Association. For the first seven months of the year, Prius sales in Japan total 79,122 units. Almost 10% of these were placed through the scrappage scheme.

New vehicle registrations also outpaced scrappage by more than 42%—the highest rate seen since the statistic has been tracked, according to the analysis. Scrappage is defined by a vehicle being taken out of the fleet and no longer in use. Looking ahead, IHS forecasts that average age is likely to hit 11.6 until 2018.
