Fifty years after the birth of the rechargeable lithium-ion battery, it’s easy to see its value. It was manufactured in small volumes by Exxon, appeared at an electric vehicle show in Chicago in 1977, and served briefly as a coin cell battery. Did Exxon invent the rechargeable lithium battery? But then Exxon dropped it.

Goodenough was awarded the 2012 IEEE Medal for Environmental and Safety Technologies for discoveries that “paved the way for development of the rechargeable lithium-ion battery technology.” It later became the chemistry of choice for early electric cars including the 2008 Tesla Roadster.

He earned a bachelor's degree in biology in 2007 from Loyola University in Chicago. He went on to earn a master's degree in computer science in 2008, also from Loyola. Mr. Moore made available his Papillion home’s historic dryer outlet as a recharging site when the roadtrip reached the vicinity of Omaha, Nebraska. Note: Recharging from a standard 110 VAC, 12-Amp source would take 27 to 30 hours to replenish the battery pack and significantly slow the progress of the roadtrip.
