Conversion systems allow vehicles to run on alternative fuels; most conversions involve switching gasoline or diesel vehicles to operate instead on a gaseous fuel such as natural gas or propane; an alcohol fuel; or electricity. EPA expects the streamlined approach to result in a cost savings for many converters.

Even a highly efficient combustion engine converts only about one-third of the energy in the fuel into traction actually propelling the car. The remaining two-thirds are lost as waste heat going into the environment through the car’s exhaust emissions and through the radiator.

The ICE will have a new combustion chamber, exhaust system concept and variable trumpets, as permitted by the 2015 regulations. The V6 engine and its electrical motors are capable of producing 850 horsepower (634 kW) using just 100 kg of fuel per race, with fuel flow rate limited to 100 kg/hr max. Soot could be further reduced by converting vehicles to run on renewable electric power. Black carbon converts sunlight to heat and radiates it back to the air around it.
