California is tracking to meet or to exceed the current target of reducing greenhouse gas emissions to 1990 levels by 2020, as established in the California Global Warming Solutions Act of 2006 (AB 32). The 28-nation European Union, for example, set the same target for 2030 just last October.

Conference of Mayors Join Drive for Plug-in Hybrid Vehicles LAS VEGAS—June 5, 2006— The U.S. Conference of Mayors today unanimously endorsed a resolution encouraging the use of plug-in hybrid vehicles as an important step in reducing this country’s reliance on foreign oil and decreasing greenhouse gas emissions from vehicles.

There are four general categories of offsets: (1) biological sequestration projects; (2) renewable energy projects; (3) energy efficiency projects; and (4) non-CO 2 emissions reduction projects. (1) 2) Examples of Renewable Energy Projects. The cap would make fossil fuels more expensive and renewable energy sources more attractive.

Another of my favorite people on the Southern California environmental scene is State Senator Fran Pavley who also spoke at the press conference. From there she went on to author and spearhead AB 32 our Global Warming Solutions Act of 2006. I’ve heard him speak at the Plug-In conference. If you can afford them.

The South Bay is defined by the LAX Airport to the north and the Port of Los Angeles to the south - two of the biggest polluters in Southern California. Hopefully Heidi’s contract will get renewed and she’ll continue her work, but there are certainly no guarantees. They’re kind of funny that way.
