Imperial Oil Limited has approved a $2 billion expansion of the company’s Cold Lake in situ oil sands operation in northeastern Alberta. The expansion, called Nabiye, will bring on additional commercial bitumen production of more than 40,000 barrels per day at Cold Lake.

A new study released by Global Forest Watch Canada finds that significant amounts of greenhouse gases are emitted through the disturbance and/or removal of biocarbon (trees, shrubs, peats), which overlay Alberta’s oil sands. These land-use change emissions have not previously been measured nor reported by governments and industry.

Encana Oil & Gas (USA) Inc., On 9 December, EPA released a draft analysis of data from its Pavillion, Wyoming ground water investigation, indicating that ground water in the aquifer contains compounds likely associated with gas production practices, including hydraulic fracturing. From 2004 to 2007 Encana drilled 44 wells.
