Researchers from the US Department of Energy’s (DOE) SLAC National Accelerator Laboratory and Stanford University have designed a new lithium/polysulfide (Li/PS) semi-liquid (flow) battery for large-scale energy storage, with lithium polysulfide (Li 2 S 8 ) in ether solvent as a catholyte and metallic lithium as an anode.

Researchers at the Dalian Institute of Chemical Physics (DICP) of the Chinese Academy of Sciences report that a 2 kW vanadium redox flow battery under development there for grid storage has been in operation for 1,429 days as of 4 June, with a total running time of more than 34,000 hours and 10,000 charge/discharge cycles.

The cell operates without a catalyst and has high storage efficiency. The possibility of a flow-through mode for the cathode allows flexibility of the cell design for safe, large-capacity electrical-energy storage at an acceptable cost, they conclude. The high energy storage has stimulated a worldwide study of Li-air batteries.
