Audi''s Gen 2 3.0L Audi of America introduced four new TDI clean diesel models for the US market this year—the Audi A8, A7, A6, Q5—along with an updated Q7 TDI, all equipped with a second-generation 3.0L V6 TDI diesel engine. TDI clean diesel represents almost 25% of Audi and Volkswagen US sales.

The new Audi R18 e-tron quattro diesel hybrid ( earlier post ) will start the 80 th running of Le Mans from grid position one. Le Mans record winner Tom Kristensen in the number “2” Audi R18 e-tron quattro set the fourth-fastest lap (3m 25.433s) behind the quickest hybrid vehicle from Toyota. But this is just a very small step.

Areas of work being focused on by Volkswagen include the development of a high-performance diesel engine delivering 100 kW (134 hp) per liter of displacement and a new 10-speed dual clutch gearbox that reduces fuel consumption. Since 2000, the group has reduced the fuel consumption of its TDI and TSI engines by more than 30%.

Ongoing political and economic uncertainty, including lack of clarity around Brexit, alongside consumer preoccupation with diesel bans in cities, meant that overall demand continued to decline. At the same time, diesel cars continued to lose ground. Last month, they recorded the lowest monthly market share since September 2000.

Audi posted its 12 th Le Mans 24 Hour victory on Sunday in its Audi R18 e-tron diesel hybrid quattro. A permitted fuel tank capacity of 58 liters theoretically made a maximum of 1,972 liters of diesel fuel available at the stops. Audi also topped the efficiency index as well.

The Volkswagen Group is continuing its restructuring in the aftermath of the diesel engine emissions scandal. Having started his career at Ford, he was Head of Volkswagen Group Research from 2000 to 2003. He began his career at Audi in Ingolstadt in 1987. Ulrich Eichhorn will lead Group Research and Development.
