Audi''s Gen 2 3.0L Audi of America introduced four new TDI clean diesel models for the US market this year—the Audi A8, A7, A6, Q5—along with an updated Q7 TDI, all equipped with a second-generation 3.0L V6 TDI diesel engine. TDI clean diesel represents almost 25% of Audi and Volkswagen US sales.

Areas of work being focused on by Volkswagen include the development of a high-performance diesel engine delivering 100 kW (134 hp) per liter of displacement and a new 10-speed dual clutch gearbox that reduces fuel consumption. Among alternative drive systems, plug-in hybrids in particular offer great potential, Winterkorn said.

The new Audi R18 e-tron quattro diesel hybrid ( earlier post ) will start the 80 th running of Le Mans from grid position one. Le Mans record winner Tom Kristensen in the number “2” Audi R18 e-tron quattro set the fourth-fastest lap (3m 25.433s) behind the quickest hybrid vehicle from Toyota.

Audi will compete in the 80 th running of the 24 Hours of Le Mans on 16-17 June 2012 with a total of four LMP1 sports cars. Two of the four cars in action will be equipped with hybrid drive for the first time. Audi racked up its first win for a TFSI engine in 2001 and for a diesel-powered car (the Audi R10 TDI) in 2006.

At the same time, diesel cars continued to lose ground. Last month, they recorded the lowest monthly market share since September 2000.

Audi posted its 12 th Le Mans 24 Hour victory on Sunday in its Audi R18 e-tron diesel hybrid quattro. A permitted fuel tank capacity of 58 liters theoretically made a maximum of 1,972 liters of diesel fuel available at the stops. Audi also topped the efficiency index as well.

In addition, its diesel version is the top selling passenger car diesel in the market here, with about 29% share, according to figures compiled by Baum & Associates and hybridcars.com. TDI Clean Diesel EA288 engine ( earlier post ) with an EPA-rated highway fuel economy rating of 46 mpg with the manual transmission (45 mpg automatic).
