Jeremy Michalek and colleagues found that while a fleet with plug-in hybrid electric vehicles (PHEVs) with universal high electric range (i.e., 87 miles all electric) minimizes petroleum consumption, minimum lifecycle greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions are achieved with a mix of low-range (~25 miles) and mid-range (40-50 miles) PHEVs.

Sandia Labs Battery Abuse Testing Laboratory undergoing $4.2M renovation to enable testing of larger batteries for EVs and PHEVs

The facility for battery testing was built in 1991, and has conducted thousands of scientific studies to evaluate the safety of batteries under a wide range of imaginable abuse scenarios that a battery might face in the real world. We’ll have the capability to test batteries in the 5- to 15-kilowatt-hour range, which we’ve never done before.

Stimulus Bill Provides Major Increase in Plug-in Vehicle Purchase Credit Program

The $787-billion stimulus bill (HR 1, the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act) that emerged from the joint House-Senate conference committee this week provides funds for a large range of transportation-related projects. A 10% credit, up to a maximum of $4,000, for the cost of converting any motor vehicle into a qualified PHEV.
