Scheduled maintenance costs over eight years/100,000 miles are projected to be 40% less than for the gas-powered Transit based on recommended service schedules published in 2019 and 2020 owner’s manuals.

The CTL study was conducted using data collected by the international office supplier Staples, as well as ISO New England, the nonprofit firm that runs New England’s electric power grid. Trucks with internal-combustion engines averaged 10.14 miles per gallon, compared to 11.56 kilowatt-hours per mile.

This is a unique approach that seeks to replace lower efficiency, high maintenance, long-stroke linear generator systems. Eliminating these subsystems reduces both capital and operations and maintenance costs and improves turbine reliability. The project will assess the cost of manufacturing these systems at various scales.
