The electrical motor draws its energy from a high-voltage battery pack, housed in the luggage compartment, which can be charged via the grid. Use of the combustion engine provides a minimum additional range of 400 kilometers (249 miles), which is in line with the driving profile of Chinese customers in the premium segment, BMW says.

The BMW Concept ActiveE follows the all-electric MINI E as the second large-scale electric vehicle test program to be conducted in the hands of interested customers. The field tests with the MINI E as part of Project i in the US and Europe have already provided insights into the demands required of future production electric vehicles.

The feedback from customers testing the MINI E and the BMW ActiveE will be fed directly into series production of the MCV, which the BMW Group will be launching under a new sub-brand in 2013. Intensive use of this recuperation of energy via the motor also results in a range increase of up to 20%.
